As an Israeli, I never really understood the USA Judaism issue, but the last months made me a bit more involved. My family and I stumbled upon a shlichut option (don’t worry – we’re staying at the Holy land eventyully:), and so I became to know the great Jewish communities of the east coast – especially the “Jewish reserve” of NJ (i.e. Teaneck:), where we have some Israeli friends.

Now, lately I was busy writing about the slavery-and-scripture issue, as reflected in “12 Years a Slave” movie –
and somehow I’ve encountered this great-2-chords-country-song by Merle Haggard –
Okie from Muskogee

Immediately an “Orthodokie from New Jersey” theme sparked in my head, and I’ve decided  to convert the song to Judaism – an Orthodox Giyur, of course…

So here are my lyrics, but I recommend looking at the original ones in order to better understand the inspiration of the song.

כישראלי, מעולם לא הבנתי לעומק את יהדות ארה”ב, אבל החודשים האחרונים גרמו לי להיות קצת יותר מעורב. משפחתי ואני נתקלנו בהצעה ל’שליחות’ (אל דאגה – אנחנו נשארים בארץ בסוף:), וכך התחלתי להכיר את הקהילות היהודיות הגדולות בחוף המזרחי של ארה”ב – בייחוד “השמורה היהודית” של ניו ג’רזי (הלא היא העיירה טיִנֶק:), שם יש לנו כמה חברים ישראלים.

עכשיו, בזמן האחרון הייתי עסוק בכתיבה אודות נושא העבדות והמקרא, בעקבות הסרט “12 שנים של עבדות” – ואיכשהו נתקלתי בשיר הקאנטרי הנפלא של מירל הגרד “אוקי ממוסקוגי“. מייד נצנצה בראשי וריאציה אודות “אורתודוקסי בניו ג’רזי”, והחלטתי לגייר את השיר (גיור אורתודוקסי כמובן:).

הנה המילים שלי – ומומלץ מאוד למי שרוצה להבין, לקרוא גם את המילים המקוריות:
